University of Texas Elementary School
About Us: Now in its eighth year of operation, The University of Texas Elementary School is firmly established as a research-based demonstration school in the heart of East Austin. The school holds a track record of success in serving urban children. Founded in 2003 as part of The UT System's Every Child, Every Advantage initiative to support P-16 education, UT Elementary is operated by UT Austin as an open-enrollment campus, free to students, with a lottery-based admission system. The school enrolls children in grade levels pre-kindergarten through fifth. Our pre-kindergarten class has 20 students and all other grades kindergarten-through-fifth have two classes of 20. UT Elementary offers a full, TEKS-aligned curriculum, employs scientifically-based research and best teaching practices, and draws upon a variety of resources available at the university. Besides providing an educational alternative for East Austin children, UT Elementary also represents an effort to apply new knowledge produced in the academic setting directly to classrooms in urban schools, and it serves as a training and development site for future teachers, social workers, psychologists, speech therapists, and nurses currently enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin. US Colleges Set Enrollment Record
US Colleges Set Enrollment Record
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com College enrollment has reached an all-time high in the United States. About forty percent of all eighteen- to twenty-four-year-olds -- or almost eleven and a half million -- were in school in October of last year. A new report says both numbers are record highs. Richard Fry at the Pew Research Center points to a number of reasons. He says the number of young adults who have finished high school is also now at a record all-time high. Almost eighty-five percent of America's young adults have finished high school. Another reason for the enrollment increase the recession. The unemployment rate reached a twenty-six year high in October. The economic downturn has hit young adults especially hard. Richard Fry says their job-holding rate is almost at the lowest point in nearly fifty years. In a poor job market, many people turn to higher education, especially at two-year colleges. These schools, known as community colleges, have had the greatest enrollment increase. They offer professional training and cost a lot less than programs at four-year schools. But experts say the recession has not cut enrollment in four-year programs, even with their higher costs. The Chronicle of Higher Education says at least fifty-eight private colleges now charge fifty thousand dollars or more a year. Lately there have been accusations that some private, competitive liberal arts colleges are trying to avoid being seen as ...

Neely Elementary School
Neely Elementary School
Neely Elementary Title I School was closed in 2009 after a bond request failed to build a new school located just one block away. Voters were asked to support a bond to close 4 older buildings in order to replace them with two news buildings. I asked district officials for the capacity of our current facilities, but was told it was too difficult to know, so I asked how the decision was made to close Neely and Webster Title I Elementary Schools. I was told old buildings are too costly to maintain. Since 18 of our 23 buildings were built before 1955, I asked why these schools were chosen for closure over any of the others. I was told Neely needed millions in repairs, so I asked to see the estimate. It was not available; so I was instructed to contact the CFO. He told me Steve Foutch had given an estimate for about $4 million, but he didn't know what it covered. I called Steve Foutch who left the message you hear on this video. He explains that he gave an estimate to renovate Neely and Hall to compare to brand new buildings. I learned the estimate was $102 per sq. ft. which would be about $4 million as Neely is 40000 sq. ft. and is the 10th largest of the 18 elementary buildings. When I asked our Superintendent why voters weren't given the option to renovate versus building new, she said nobody asked. I became very concerned that once our school was closed, more than 200 children that used to walk to their neighborhood school would now be bused to other schools and voters ...
